The food industry in the United States today is the major force behind the foods we eat every day, and the vast majority of the products we consume and purchase provide little to no health benefits. Why? Is it because the food industry is driven by profit and big business, instead of the health and welfare of its customers. According to the documentary Fed Up, the food industry has the control and refuses to take responsibility that the products they produce are the reason behind this alarming rise in obesity (Soechtig, 2014). As a direct result, childhood obesity is at an all-time high. One third of children in America are now considered obese (Rutkow L, 2015). This program attacks the issue on a grand scale, providing information and steps to he lp guide Americans in making healthier choices for food and exercise (Obama, 2010). The initial response scared the majority of the food industry, believing that big brother government will interfere and disrupt this multi-billion dollar industry. So to demonstrate their comment, the food industry joined the cause and backed the First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative. As the documentary describes, this was a calculated move by the food industry to side step the responsibility that they are leading cause of this epidemic. They came to the agreement to remove â€Å"14 trillion calories† (Soechtig, 2014) from the food consumed today. This gesture was viewed as grand step forward in battling the obesity; however when the dust settled and the numbers were crunched, the evidence indicated minimal amount of calories were affected, approximately 14 calories per person a day was all that this step resulted in (Soechtig, 2014). Introduction Over the years comprehensive research has been accomplished and has determined that children raised by substance using parents are at an increased risk for developing substance use disorders (SUDs) in adulthood as a result of familial dissemination of substance abuse through both the environments in which the children are raised and genetic susceptibility (Merikangas et al., 1998; Merikangas Avenevoli, 2000). Unfortunately, there is an insignificant amount of literature examining the effects that the combined treatment and recovery of substance abusing parents has on the affected children. Information collected in 2010 shows that roughly 137,761 individuals were hospitalized as a result of alcohol or drug poisoning (Yoon,†¦show more content†¦The perspective of the dilemma of SUDs is that it not only affects the user, but it also their family and all those exposed to them. As the previously discussed statistics show, substance abuse is a substantial issue in our society. The problem of SUDs extends beyond the individual as it usually effects more than just the private life of the user. As a result of SUDs, individuals may in turn end up having involvement with the legal system, child protective services and may need to seek assistance from other government agencies. It was not until the mid-nineteenth century that we began to see new ways to use these substances, and different means to extract properties of such substances. It was during that time that cocaine was identified by chemists as the psychoactive substance of the coca leaf, and that morphine and codeine were first extracted from the opium poppy. It was also the time when the hypodermic needle was invented. It was not until the purifications and new found transmissions of such substances that we began to experience such increased risk (DuPont, 1997). Learning New Things As a full-time college student majoring in Nursing I hope to become a RN one day. I work part-time as a CNA in a Nursing Home now. Being a CNA is very hard work. My former co-workers always tell me I’m too young to do that kind of work and to keep going to school to better myself. Being a nurse can sometime be hard work too. Nurses have to make sure the patients are doing good and eating right. Some of the patients can get a little rude and they will fight you. When I seen that happen I was shocked and scared. The first thing the nurse did was ask me to help hold the patient down while she give him his medicine. While holding him down she was talking to him trying to calm him down. She was telling him things like I’m not trying to hurt you I’m only trying to help. He was still fighting and cursing. I couldn’t believe that happened. As I watched, I was scared. I never been in a situation like that before. However, it is good experience because nurses have to go through that everyday. I was thinking about what would I do if I was the nurse that day. It made me think about if I really wanted to a nurse anymore. I do, but I want to work in a hospital I think that would be better than a nursing home. I realized that patients have their bad and good days. Sometimes they don’t feel like being bothered or touched. Some days they don’t mind if you help them but most of the time they try to be independent. On the patient bad days you just have to have patients and stay calm. Being a nurse comes with many responsibilities. It’s an easy job but it can be difficult. I always loved helping others and caring for people that’s what made me want to become a nurse.
